Christmas Ornaments 2012

So after I mentioned the ornaments yesterday, I thought it might be nice to show you some of the ornaments on the tree.

It’s a pretty diverse collection, since I’ve been collecting them for over 20 years now (yipes, that’s a long time!). Of course, I don’t buy ornaments every year — not even every 3-4 years. And I tend to scavenge ornaments from thrift stores and craft projects, so it’s not as big of a collection as you might think, especially when you factor in breakage, which is inevitable.

When I first started collecting ornaments, I only bought white, silver, cream and gold. It did make for a pretty tree, and I always was proud of it, but it never felt like me, somehow. A few years ago I started picking up molded glass ornaments, and they are so colorful and cute, I just love them, though I didn’t put as many of them on the tree or as “up front” until this year. I’m so thankful now that I finally have let go of all of my preconceived ideas about what’s “tasteful” or not and I put the colorful ornaments right up front and center.

My molded glass ornamenets include vintage-inspired globes like this purple one:

And a whole variety of shapes like this Santa Claus.

I have frogs, angels, pickles, pine cones, hoses, trains, snowmen, poinsettias, acorns… and even a Hogwarts Express and mid-Quidditch match Harry Potter. (Yes the golden snitch is also hung on the tree for Harry to catch.)

Also on the tree are special ornaments like the first ornament Mr. Magpie and I bought together, at an art gallery in Wyoming:

Ornaments I’ve made:

And vintage ornaments I’ve been given (plus, say hello, Angela! Hee hee.)

All in all, I’ve loved our tree this year. It’s been coloful and fun, just like I want our home to be year round.

(And yes, if you have been paying attention, that is my family room, and no, it does not look at all like it did a few months ago, so I’ll be sharing that after the holidays).

What are your favorite kind of ornaments?
