Thrifted Coffee Table for Family Room
So, when I wrote about my latest thrift store finds, I mentioned that I had also found a piece of furniture at the Goodwill, well here it is! A coffee table that I got for $20! Some of the glass is broken so I'll have to replace that, and I'll probably paint it. But even with those projects, $20 for a solid oak table? I'm there! And it fits so nicely with the corner sofa we bought for the family room, much better than the table we had gotten. I can't tell you how pleased I am.
So now, here's my question: what should I do with the glass panels? Let's assume I'm going to paint the table white or cream (which is, at the moment, the plan). Would you put plain glass in? Or, considering I have a toddler and a husband who likes to put his feet up, would you go with something sturdier? Like four mosaic panels? Or would you put a big cushion on it and make it into a kind of an ottoman?
If you were me, what would you do?

If I were you Angela , I would do something very very tricky that would have us all gasping and thinking "how did she ever think of that?"
But If I were me , I would paint it white and promise to do something about the glass and then leave it like that for years probably....or until the glass actually fell out.

Oh boy! If it were me, nothing very inspiring would happen, BUT I definitely think you should have a surface where you can set your coffee cup without it wobbling or build something great out of lego, so I definitely wouldn't put a pillow on top. I like your idea about the a mosaic top. Are you thinking of the pretty glass tiles or smashed teacups (which would be a bit wobbly)? Since you are so handy, could you build a sort of box (mounted underneath the table)to act as a shadowbox to showcase collectibles or photos? That would be pretty...
Either way, you got a fantastic deal!! It will be beautiful painted white, and will look great with that stunner of a sofa!! I so wish I was near an Ikea. That's what I love about you and your blog: no store is dismissed in the pursuit of "quality". I, too, think you can get just as good a look while hunting down the bargains, and I personally think Ikea is quality enough for me! Sure, you can get much better quality elsewhere, but at this stage of my life, I don't want to fork out the cash. And...I personally don't want to be stuck with a sofa for 15 yrs just because it's such good quality and cost me a mint. Change is good!!
Oh yeah, will you send me your address so I can send you something? Just email me with it if you get a chance...

I LOVE the table but with toddlers in the house ... I can see an accident happening. Not to mention big boots on the table! I'm sure an idea will come to you that suits your family well. Good luck!

Since I have a glass top coffee table which I'm tired of, I would replace the glass with something else...mosaics sound nice, or with wood panels which would also be painted. It fits nicely with your sectional sofa. I love buffalo checks and especially in that color, it looks great.

Do you know how to turn it into an ottoman? I would love to do that with ours, but have no idea on how to go about it.
Of course I would also like to paint it too, but hubby won't let me. (He is a professional painter by trade) Plus the coffee table set we have was only $100 and he doesn't see the need to do that when we should go out and get a new one. But I would LOVE to experiment!!

Oh.. I think you should do a reverse glass decoupage on the panels with a big ottoman pillow that is removeable for now.. to be removed when the little one gets bigger!

I love different coffee tables, it just makes a conversation piece and it looks like yours fits the bill. I bought one a long time ago that was an old picture frame they just added iron legs to. Love it! just becareful not
to put any heavy stuff on the glass!

Mosaic inserts would be cute, but not very smooth for your little one to color on. How about seeded glass? They might not show smudges so much.

How about removing the glass and replacing it with wood? I'm sure what ever you do, it will be gorgeous. I don't know how I missed the post about your sofa but I'm so glad I went back and reread it. We're looking for a sectional for our basement when we get around to finishing it and I hadn't realized ikea had one. Is it slipcovered? Is it comfy and holding up well?I'm headed to their website to check it out.

What a find! I'm sure you'll do something great with it. But what I adore is your check couch, it's something I would get. Love it!

what a great find! Glass is really annoying because it can get smudges, esp with a toddler and a husband around! I like the mosaic idea a lot!

I love the idea of painting the table. My daughter paints anything and everything she gets black and it looks like a million dollars when she is finished. I have an idea which will work since there will still be wood cross pieces on the top for setting your cup of tea. What about mosaic (I know you mentioned it) but use broken vintage china pieces. I've seen it done on lots of areas (even a window sill) and I love the look. I'm sure you have enough friends that have chipped or broken china that they just can't throw away (like yours truly)that would be willing to share. I've been redecorating and I know how exciting it can be when it starts to come together. Good luck.

Oh, my what a deal. You can't beat that. It's beautiful. I can't believe it was only 20 bucks. I'll have to check back to see how you transform it. Love your floral box pillow in the background too. Happy holidays!

Hi, Angela! Nice find on the coffee table, that's a pretty piece with great lines. I can see it painted. And, if it were me, I'd probably take the easy route & just get plain glass cut for it. It's got enough detail that I don't think it needs anything fancy.
On that Sophisticated Finishes paint, you can get it at Michaels. That's the only place around me I've found it. They had the small craft bottles & larger ones & I had to buy a little kit with 2 bottles to get the darker bronze I wanted. Check out your Michaels.

Hi,
I am all for mosaic inserts, since I am mosaic artist :-). Just make sure you dremel the sharp edges to smooth them out. Mosaics can be make from vintage china and kept level and smooth, I do it all the time! Of course if your child will color on the table, it would have indents where the grout is...so if she is coloring on the table - then I wouldn't do mosiacs....
I love the shape of your table!

Great table! And for $20.00, a steal.
I like the idea of mosaic.
My mom found one very similar at a thrift store. Hers had a broken glass panel, too.
She replaced them with large floor tiles. I think hers are ceramic, but made to look like marble.

How about...smooth granite looking tile to fill in the glass areas...it's very sturdy and pretty. I see a lot of furniture done this way now. Black paint would make it look very sharp, but something on the deep warm red side would make it a fun family room color.

What a great find! I love thrifting--and trashpicking, which is my favorite thing about city life, lol.
I like the way those glass tiles look as they are... but then, I can't see where the broken areas are. All four look solid to me. Here's a thought: paint the table liked you'd planned and put the mirrors/glass back in. (Or mirror-finish the glass if you want.) Then get a larger sheet of glass that will cover all 4 of them, making for a smooth top but leaving the look. Even with the cost of custom glass cutting, the whole table is still a steal, right?!

Hi Angie
I think it would be a shame to paint beautiful oak wood like that. Just repair the glass or replace a couple of the quarters with some other kind of glass for a different effect. I would vote for keeping the oak.
