The New Garden! Woo hoo!!
I know you've all been dying to see what the garden looks like at the new house. We'll be getting the keys tomorrow, so I think it's safe to finally say it's really happening and show it all off. So, that there above is the front yard. You can see the foundation plantings are completely a wee bit, uh, out of control mature.
Here's the back yard:
That's a pear tree in the middle. I have to say I considered losing it, but my husband and I were married under a pear tree, and it's centered on the family room window, so it's going to stay. But it's going to get pulled back into shape. When you look at its undercarriage you can tell it was once in great shape but hasn't been pruned in years.
I'm also totally psyched about having a covered porch. I've never had one before! Of course, the one and only one perennial in this entire garden is a clump of yellow daylilies at the corner of it. No idea what color they are yet, but I'm sure they're staying.
I'm hoping to make this shed it look like a cute little cottage:
And here's the best part; the side yard:
This is the future home of my fruit, vegetable and cutting garden. Aside from hacking trimming back the house-swallowing mature foundation plantings, this is my number one garden project. Just imagine a picket fence, arbors, fruit trees, beds of veggies and cutting flowers....I can't wait.
As you can see, it's pretty much a blank slate but it has some good structure. So I'm very excited! Even though it's a ton of work, at least it's mostly just adding beds and plantings, no major landscaping, which is nice. And I'm happy it's devoid of plantings (except that clump of mystery daylilies). If it was already beautiful I'd be faced with (a) nothing to add, and (b) having to contemplate ripping out perfectly good garden because it's not the way I would want it. So this is the best posible situation for me.
And don't worry. Every little detail of the progression will be posted right here. :-)

It's too late to plant some vegetables, but there's lots you can still get in: summer squash, cucumbers, beets, carrots, lettuce, chard, and maybe even potatoes. Plus tons of cutting flowers.

So you'll have the keys Saturday? When's the actual move day?

Hey, I think I see a house behind those "mature" foundation plantings. Don't hold back on those when you get the chain saw, I mean pruners, out!

Congratulations on your beautiful new home! I am so excited for you. I remember how thrilled we were each time we have moved into a new place. It's a lot of work, but you will have a ball getting everything just the way you want it.

I love seeing your new home (inside and out). This is like a bloggy version of House Hunters, 'cept we don't know what the other two options looked like. And we have to wait 6 months to see what it looks like in 6 months!

But it's a beautiful blank slate, and the lawn looks weed-free. A real bonus! My son and his wife just moved into their first home and I have spend days weeding dandelions and thistle from the lawn.

How exciting to have a new house, new garden, etc. it's like having a "clean piece of canvas" and you can paint whatever you want on it! Have you ever read the book "lasagna gardening"? My mom sent it to me and I really liked it. It had some good ideas in it.
