The Non-Design Wall

Temporary Design Wall

So, here's my problem. I don't have a design wall. It's not for lack of desire, just lack of space. My studio isn't that big, and I have a lot of stuff in here. So I don't have the pure, unadulterated wall space for a design wall. But guess what? I desperately need one. Especially now that I've started working on this new quilt, which I plan to make reasonably large (just shy of twin-sized, for the family room couch).

So, what's a poor, space-challenged girl to do? Improvise, that's what! I've got a double-bank of bookshelves in here. I dug through my stash and found a piece of flannel. Granted, it's ochre with red flowers rather than a nice neutral grey or beige. But it's flannel, anyway. I took some push pins and pinned it up to the front of the bookshelves. Since it's not flat, the units have to be pinned to it with straight pins, rather than staying by themselves, but for an emergency situation, it's functional. It's only half the size of the quilt I'm working on, so I'll have to lay out the other half on the work table, but I'm thrilled anyway. Now I can actually see what I'm doing! Yay!
